Fontcase – iTunes like Elegant Font Management for Mac

I just got a copy of Fontcase, currently in beta stage and will be released sometime in January 2009 after Macworld. When I first discovered this app, it pretty much sound like Typeset from Waterfall Software, but I thought – why would anyone release a similar app and not making it the better.

Indeed, Fontcase, although in its beta stage, is like Typeset on steriods. Also, if you use iTunes extensively, you’ll find that this app works similarly to iTunes, you’ll find out why after reading this article.

The man behind font case, Laurent Baumann, is also the man behind Coversutra, iShowU HD, SmartBackup, etc to name a few.

Fontcase is very elegant and intuitive, the moment I launch Fontcase, I know there’s no way I’m zapping it.

What I really love about this app is not only that you can preview any text you type in,

You can also preview any font by Lorum Ipsum, how thoughtful, very useful if you’re a designer searching for the right bodytext font to compliment your designs:

Not only that, you can rate and tag your fonts, all other info regarding a particular font are also welcome:

Create folders by – collections, smart folders (much like how you would on iTunes), Foundry, Genre, Designer and Tag

How the “Collection” folder will work for me is that I can create a new folder based on a new design project, and shortlist all those fonts that I deem appropriate for that project into the Collection. That’s what I call font management for my projects!

If you have co-workers using the same app under the same network, you can happily share your fonts over the network, but I must say that this function crashes alot and doesn’t seem to be working during this beta stage, so please bear with it at this time until the developer fixes it:

Lastly, have you ever had friends or colleagues sending you an email, asking you to send them a particular font? If you have, the next time you can just drag the font out into a newly composed email window and send it to them.
