TuneUp cleans your tracks by fixing your mislabeled music and missing coverarts. The app adds a new sidebar to iTunes with all the tools you need to use to clean up your music. The now playing tab displays information about the track and even lets you play the music video of the track right in the sidebar (video fetched from YouTube). TuneUp was really buggy when it first launches late last year due to the overwhelming response but I guess they should have cleared out the kinks by now. DockArt

DockArt does a simple but extremely useful job by replacing the default iTunes icon in your dock with the currently playing music’s coverart. When you stop your music, your iTunes icon reverts back to the original one.

AutoRate

AutoRate automatically rates your tracks based on how often the track is played and how often each track is skipped. Might not be the most accurate, but a good start if you are not really active in rating your music.

Yes you can find many quick dial apps on the store, but spotting one with a pleasing interface is hard. You can even customize the background by using a picture from your photo library.

I have always wanted to try Basecamp but haven’t found the reason to, but if you are one proud user, you’ll be able to appreciate this native iPhone app for Basecamp. Outpost is also the first app for Basecamp which offers full offline capabilities.

This post is more for new Mac users, or Mac users who’ve not tried any Mail plugins before and would like to explore better use of Mac OS X native Mail application. Here are 6 of the best Mail plugins I can’t live without.

1 – Mail Act-On 2 ($24.95)

If you’re an organized Mail user, you’ll most likely have many mail folders setup so that you can sort individual emails into their respective folders. Overtime it makes you counter-productive as you’ll end up with tons of folders sorted into different levels, dragging them into their respective folder becomes a pain as you have to find that particular folder from a whole stack of them. Mail Act-On solves that problem by letting you call up a HUD panel via a hotkey, letting you type the name of the folder and hitting “Enter” to file the email instead. I’ve been using this plugin extensively, $24.95 is worth every dime.

But if you want a free alternative, you can also try MsgFiler. Although the program will nag you to pay $8 within intervals of your use, if you don’t mind the nag, you can use it free forever.

2 – WideMail (Free)

Wide screen monitors and laptops are everywhere these days, you’re probably using one, to make full use of the screen estate when using Mail, you’ll be happy to use WideMail plugin. To put it simply, WideMail displays your mail vertically instead of the original horizontal display. This makes reading emails easier.

3 – MailUnread (Free)

MailUnread is a menubar plugin that shows you how many unread emails you have in your Mail. So whenever a new mail arrives, you’ll immediately know it. What’s more there’s an option to see a few lines of the new emails before you decide whether it needs your immediate attention.

4 – MiniMail ($9)

MiniMail is like a Mini Player for iTunes. Clicking on the “+” sign on the Mail app collapse Mail into a “Mini Player like window”, MiniMail for this instance. You can scroll through unread mails, reply, create a new mail, delete, mark as read, check for new mail etc. Small but powerful plugin. MiniMail works best if you have a dual monitor setup, so that you can place MiniMail on the other monitor while making space for other applications you want to place on that monitor, iCal or iTunes for example.

5 – Mail Appetizer (Free)

Mail Appetizer displays a notification window everytime a new email arrives. You can then determine whether the message requires your immediate attention.

6 – Mail Attachment Scanner (Donation)

There are times we send out an email saying “Attached is the file.” only to get a reply from the recipient telling you nothing was attached. This can be embarrassing when the recipient is your professional client. Mail Attachment Scanner solves this for you. This plugin scans the email for words like “attached” when you click “Send”, if the plugin can’t find any attachments in the email it’ll prompt you before sending it out. A nifty tool.

Subjectivity is a simple but helpful plugin that will let you know if you forgot to fill in the subject line of an email you’re sending out.

8 – Mail Widget (Free)

Mail Widget is a dashboard widget that will check your email periodically (user defined) even if your Mail is not running, complete with growl notification. There is also an option where you can enable a female voice to speak to you eg. “New Mail Has Arrived” when there is a new unread mail in your inbox.

While looking at the stats, 82% of SUBERAPPS readers are Mac users and a majority are Safari users. Today I’m going to share with you 11 cool and useful plugins to power up your Safari. I’m a Safari user myself and I use almost all of the plugins that are mentioned below:

1 – Safari 140 (Free)

- Post to Twitter from Safari (Link)

The latest of them all. Safari 140 allows you to post to Twitter in less than 3 steps. Lets say you’ve just read an interesting article and wants to tweet about it, all you have to do is to hit Ctrl + T, Safari 140 grabs the title and shortens the link and ready for you to hit the “Post to Twitter” button.

2 – Inquisitor (Free)

- Speeds up your searches (Link)

Basically, Inquisitor shows you search suggestions and keywords as you type on Safari’s search bar skipping you a visit to Google’s page before hitting the page you’re searching for. Search results are displayed elegantly as a drop down.

3 – Glims (Free)

- More options for Safari (Link)

Glims adds a slew of options to customize Safari, proves to be the most useful and comprehensive of all plugins I can find for Safari. You can choose to add thumbnails to Google search results, search suggestions (much like Inquisitor), add favicons to tab labels (much like Firefox), auto closes download windows, keyword search from address bar, remember last session, always open links in new tab, full screen mode, just to name a few important ones.

4 – Stumbi (Donationware $2)

- Stumbleupon plugin for Safari (Link)

Stumbleupon users who uses Safari hate it when Firefox gets all the Stumbleupon love. Thanks to Stumbi, we can “thumbs up”, “thumbs down”, stumble upon websites all by using shortcut keys or the embedded buttons near the address bar.

5 – Delicious Safari ($10)

- Delicious for Safari (Link)

Delicious Safari lets you save websites to Delicious right from Safari, complete with suggested tags to tag your bookmark. There is also a “notes” field to record notes about the bookmark you’re about to send to Delicious. A menu bar item shows you recently bookmarked sites on your Delicious letting you visit them immediately, without having to login to Delicious’s website.

6 – 1Password ($39.95)

- Password / Login Manager (Link)

This is one app / plugin that I can’t live without. You might have already heard of it but if you haven’t, you need to at least try it. This app saves your logins on every login, the next time when you need to login to a specific site, all you need to do is hit a shortcut key Ctrl + , 1Password will login for you. 1Password also lets you manage your wallet items like credit cards, bank account numbers, software licenses, FTPs etc, and comes with an accompanying iPhone app to complete the experience.

7 – TabExposé ($6.30)

- Exposé for Safari Tabs (Link)

You like the native Mac OS X Exposé? What if you can also do that for all your open tabs in Exposé? TabExposé lets you do just that.

8 – Cooliris (Free)

- Browse images on a 3D Wall (Link)

Previously called PicLens, an awesome and fast way to view images rendered on a beautiful 3D wall for images on Flickr, Google Images, Facebook, Friendster, Deviantart, Yahoo images, My Space, PhotoBucket, Picasa Web Albums, Getty Images, YouTube, just to name a few popular ones. Here’s a current full list.

9 – Saft (Shareware $12)

- Feature rich Safari customization plugin (Link)

This plugin, much like Glims (no. 3) in my opinion, gives you a set of customization options to pimp your Safari. Other options not included with Glims includes Ad/Banner blocking with URL pattern matching, block flash animations, block images and plugins, kiosk mode, option to use Aqua Interface, sidebar etc.

10 – SafariStand (Free / Donationware)

- Convenient Sidebar support (Link)

SafariStand plants an optional sidebar on your Safari so that you can navigate and manage your tabs via thumbnails. A Stand Bar to manage your bookmarks, history etc. Stand Search to search your bookmarks and history, with Spotlight integration. This plugin also comes with various other options to customize Safari and the web pages that you visit.

11 – Safari Guardian (Free / Donationware)

- Prevents websites from auto resizing your browser (Link)

I don’t know about you, but personally I hate it when websites automatically resizes my browser using javascript without my consent, it’s annoying when I find myself resizing my Safari back to the original size that I intended. Safari Guardian stops that annoyance. Very simple but thoughtful plugin.

As you might already know, Google recently gave GTD fans some lovin’ by optimizing Google’s “Tasks” for iPhone and Android. (read more from Google’s Blog)

Wouldn’t it be nice if you can also run Google Tasks on your Mac as a menu bar item with the same sleek interface you see on the iPhone or Android?

If you had read my previous post on the “Fluid” app, you’ll know by now how you can turn web apps into a native desktop app. Using Fluid with Google Tasks means a free GTD native desktop app on your Mac that syncs with the cloud.

Here’s how:

1) Download Fluid app

2) Install and launch Fluid

Type in this URL in the URL field - http://mail.google.com/tasks/iphone

Type any name you want in the Name field.

Create the app!

3) Convert to MenuExtra SSB

Go to the Google Tasks menu after you have successfully created the app, select “Convert to MenuExtra SSB…” to put Google Tasks on your menu bar.

Now you have Google Tasks natively on your Mac as a menu bar item!

Although Apple designed Leopard such that it makes you more productive than ever, eg. quicklook, spotlight, there are still more room for getting more out of your Mac. With the help of third party apps like the following, working on your Mac on a day to day basis becomes faster, you get more done and feel happier. Trust me, saving a bit of time here and there, will save you tons in the long run.

Also, these apps made me realize that by using the keyboard rather than the mouse, you get tasks complete faster.

1 & 2) TextExpander (Mac) & Wide Email (iPhone)

Both softwares work similarly on both platforms, saving you time typing texts both on your Mac and on the go.

They allow you to insert pre-typed long sentences or paragraphs just by typing a few letters. For eg. if you assign “cu” to “See you later!”, typing “cu” will insert “See you later!” into any text fields. With a little bit of imagination, you can use this concept and apply to all areas of your activity on your Mac (Wide Email on iPhone only allows you to expand text for Mail).

I have tried both apps and I must say they increased my productivity tenfold.

TextExpander ($29.95):

Storing snippets and assigning abbreviations

Expands few letters into chunks of texts

A few uses for TextExpander

1) Frequently visited URLs (eg if you love to visit the apple store frequently. “;a” expands to “http://www.apple.com”)
2) Commenting on blogs (eg. “;n” expands to “your full name”, “;e” expands to “yourname@gmail.com”, “;u” expands to “http://www.yourdomain.com”
3) Emails (eg. “lf” expands to “Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!”)
4) Providing someone with your address (eg. “addr” expands to your full address)
5) If you’re a coder, even better, typing a few letters will insert long snippets of code, speeding up your work

Wide Email on the iPhone ($0.99):

With so many other landscape email typing apps on the App Store, Wide Email have an edge as it lets you type long sentences (which could be cumbersome on the iPhone) by typing a few letters, similar to TextExpander. You can also store drafts for later sending and read or reuse a draft as a template. All these should have been shipped with the iPhone in my

3 & 4) QuickSilver (Launch Apps) & MsgFiler (for Apple Mail)

Why I group both QuickSilver and MsgFiler is because both apps helps you perform daily tasks just by typing a few letters.

QuickSilver (Free)

QuickSilver lets you launch apps quickly, eventually you’ll be able to launch any apps without thinking. That is true after prolonged usage of QuickSilver, you’ll wonder why you ever lived without it. I was skeptical about QuickSilver at first, thinking how much more faster can you launch an app when all your apps are already on the dock, isn’t it just a click and launch affair? But if you agree with me that using your keyboard is faster than using your mouse, then QuickSilver is for you.

Typing a default hot key combination on your keyboard <Ctrl + Space> you’ll launch the QuickSilver screen, for example if you want to launch Safari, quickly type “sa” which is basically the first few letters of the name of that app, when you see Safari’s icon on the screen, hit <Return> and you’ll launch the app. No more looking for that app on your overcrowded dock and attempting to point your mouse to it to launch it.

Other than launching apps, there are also other tricks you can perform with it.

MsgFiler ($8, free to use forever if you don’t mind the occasional nag screen)

If you think dragging your email messages into their respective folders in Mail is the only way to go, you’re wrong. MsgFiler gives you a much faster way to do it.

Select an email item, similar to QuickSilver, type the default hot key combination on your keyboard <Command + 9) to launch MsgFiler window, then type the first few letters of the name of the folder you want to file the email in and hit <Return>.

This saves you from scrolling through and finding the folder that you want the email to be filed, and then dragging the message in. Searching and hiting <return> is faster as with QuickSilver.

5) 1Password (Mac) 1Password (iPhone or Palm)

1Password securely remembers your personal details ($39.95 Single License for Desktop, Free for iPhone)
If you ever find yourself tired of filling out forms, entering login details, forgetting passwords, digging through your wallet to find that credit card number to make an online purchase, remembering your bank account number so that you can write it on a cheque, remembering your passport’s date of issue and expiry date when buying an air ticket, remembering FTP logins or software serial numbers etc, 1Password solves this part of your problem.
Not only that, you can also take the same data with you by syncing your iPhone or Palm with your desktop.
One great feature about 1Password is that the app installs a plugin on your web browser so that it saves your login information on any site without having you to manually recording it on the app.
Clicking on the “1P” icon on Safari for example will log you in immediately on any login page (if you have saved the login previously).
