Truth be told, I just missed making a payment for one of my credit cards, not because I forgot to pay but because the letter wasn’t sent to me. I’m not sure why, but had I used Chronicle, I would have noticed something was amiss when the payment was soon to be due. This is the second time I missed a payment, the first time was because the date reflected on the internet banking site wasn’t updated.

Using Chronicle, you can organize and track your bills but most importantly, it helps prevent a missed payment.

While spending some time using Chronicle, I can understand the other crucial mission of this app. It is to let you set it and forget it. Forget about your bills with confidence!

User Interface

Chronicle spots a wood like interface but it doesn’t stop there. You can change the theme to other alternate colors eg:

Dark Theme

Tranquil Theme

Right from the interface, you can see at a glance how many bills you have, how many are paid or due. If you’ve made a payment for any bill, click “Log Payment” and this will go down in a graph of payment histories which we will talk about later.

Adding A New Bill

From the screenshot, it may look a little busy but there are only a couple of simple fields to fill in. Name of the bill, payment due date, if the bill repeats or not and what is the frequency, amount due and how many days before do you want iCal to remind you.

If your bill is paid online, enter a URL so that you can pay a bill online with a click of a button.

Lastly, choose one of the many colorful icons to represent the bill.

When you hit “Save Bill”, Chronicle opens up iCal to insert a calendar event for your bill and quickly closes iCal.

iCal Integration

By automatically creating a calendar event in iCal, you will be reminded when the due date for a payment is near. Not only will you get reminded on your Mac, if you have an iPhone, you will automatically be reminded via your iPhone too if your iCal is synced with your iPhone.

Logging Payment & Add Receipts

When you log payment, you have the option to add a receipt. This is handy if you ever get audited by the accountants.

Optionally add a note and say something like “I bought an iPad for my loved one”.

Spending History

Seeing your spending history on a graph are both fun and useful. You will be able to tell a lot from your spending trends. See which months you spend money most and rectify. If you are disciplined and is serious about your finances, the spending graph should be enough to scare you into spending lesser.

Goals

This is more for people who are in debt. Setting a goal gives you a higher chance of achieving something. If you have a reasonably large balance on your credit card for example, set a goal on when you want to have the debt paid off.

Conclusion

If you are a working adult with many bills to pay, you definitely need some sort of system to manage your bills. It is like project management, there are just too many things floating around your head which you need to settle them down.

Chronicle lets you do that in a well designed and customizable interface. With many useful features pertaining to bills management like iCal integration, adding of receipts, spending history reports and setting of goals to pay off a debt, Chronicle is hell of an app to save your sanity and money.

It’s been really long since I give my Macbook Pro a clean. You know, over the years, in order to keep your Mac lean & snappy (as the title suggest), you need to clean it up.

Unless you’re a geek, forget about manually going through directories to clean out cache, duplicates, unnecessary language files, logs etc. You need a software to do this.

There are many app of this sort out there, but few gives you the kind of care that you really need.

Imagine the phone number of the company displayed on every section of the app, telling you that a representative will answer any of your questions if you call. MacKeeper is the first, at least for what I’ve seen so far.

Using MacKeeper, I effortlessly wiped out cache, logs, old files, some languages and universal binaries. I also deleted files that are way too big.

As a result, my Mac does feels snappier, especially when launching apps. If you’re curious how much space I have reclaimed – it’s a whopping 20.5GB!

Binaries Cutter

MacKeeper is split into three parts, cleaners as one of them. I used every cleaner function except old files finder as I want to keep archives of my work no matter how old it is. Some functions like Duplicates finder, I took extra precaution to make sure I don’t delete anything important.

For Binaries Cutter, it was a no brainer. There is no reason to keep the other part of the core that supports PowerPC architectures. If you’re wondering what universal binary is – Every application contains two parts of code, one that will support old PowerPC architectures and one for modern Intel based Macs. The truth is, you only need one of these cores, so MacKeeper cleans out the other to save disk space.

Cache Cleaner

Your Mac caches data so that applications can run faster. Overtime, this may be counter-intuitive because your Mac is loaded up with cache and in turn cluttering and slowing down your Mac. MacKeeper deletes your entire system’s cache with one click.

Duplicates Finder

This function is easy to understand, but Mackeeper takes it one step further, by searching for duplicate files even if they were renamed, leaving no stones unturned.

Language Cutter

With this function, I got rid of a huge list of languages that are redundant to me, except for English of course. Most applications are loaded with many languages that you will never need in your lifetime, unless you speak and read those languages. MacKeeper helps you find and delete these unnecessary language files to save more space.

Logs Cleaner

This is the function that I am most grateful for. I have never needed logs, so do you? Unless you’re a developer of an app. Otherwise there are no reasons to keep these. Applications create log files that store usage, error, statistics etc. Overtime, these files becomes larger.

If you don’t need them, get rid of them!

Old Files Finder

Unless you just started to use a computer, you hard disk is filled with old files dated several years back. If you take some time to review these files, chances are, you don’t need most of them. Especially those that are not used for a long long while. MacKeeper searches for files of this sort and let you remove them with one click. Caution though, you may want to uncheck files that you still want to keep, eg. work archives.

Tools

The rest of the features are under “Tools”. You can backup or encrypt your data. The backup feature lets you create automatic backups of your data on your FTP, ZeoDisk (an online storage service by Zeobit, coming soon), USB or external hard drive. Data encryption will hide the filename and fully encrypt the data. You will only be able to access this encrypted data through MacKeeper app.

Default Apps

I remember being used to opening .doc files and launching it with Mac Office when I really want it to open with Pages by default instead. This tool will let you set app associations with file types. A nifty tool to get rid of that little bit of annoyance.

Disk Usage

This tool gives you the easiest way to see what are the largest file sitting on your Mac. There might be movies you’ve watched and don’t need it anymore, but you forgot to delete. This tool comes in handy for this instance.

Shredder

You may have some very private files that you are hoping that no one will ever find even after you delete them. The shredder eliminates any possibilities that your files will ever be discovered once you throw them into this zone.

Undelete

Undelete on the other hand will help you retrieved files that you have deleted, less the files that were “shredded” with the previously mentioned tool of course.

Wise Uninstaller

When you delete an application from your Applications folder, you’re only half done. There are many files associated with it hidden in not very obvious places.

With Wise Uninstaller, you can rest assured that the app is completely deleted. With this utility, you can also easily delete widgets, preference panes and plugins.

Services

There are three tools under this category.

Anti-Theft is a helpful feature that will send a report of your Mac’s location to the police if it’s stolen, giving you a higher chance of retrieving your Mac.

Conclusion

With so many features, MacKeeper is certainly one of the most comprehensive housekeeping tools for your Mac. One license cost $39.95, a small price to pay for the longevity of your Mac. To get it free, read on!

If you’ve ever missed paying an overdue bill, you know the pain of paying for these late fees. Chronicle is a beautiful app to help you manage and organize your bills so that you will never miss a payment. Useful features includes being able to store scanned receipts, see spending history and trends with stats etc.

MacAds

MacAds is an advertising network for the Mac community. If you have an app to sell, be it an iPhone, Web app or anything related to the Mac, you can advertise for free at MacAds.

DesignersCouch

DesignersCouch is a community for designers/developers to share their work and inspiration with each other. Only designers with decent quality work can get in. This is such that they can maintain a high level of quality in their community.

I have tried too many iPhone RSS apps and I still couldn’t find a good one. Until MobileRSS came along, at least for now.

Apps of these categories I’ve tried are either slow, too fancy, crashes often, doesn’t let you navigate your folders etc.

MobileRSS seems to solve these problems. It’s blazing fast (I am impressed), easy on the eyes and there are some features that are just plain useful, although they seem to be copied from Tweetie and ReadItLater (which is a good thing for this instance!).

User Interface

MobileRSS spots a straightforward interface, but they didn’t just leave it as that. You can also choose a darker theme if you like.

You can hit “Show All” at the bottom if you also want to see all your folders, otherwise leave it as “Show Updated” so that your screen won’t be cluttered.

This is the alternate theme of the interface which the developer call it “Black”, doesn’t look exactly black to me but, it sure looks like a decent alternative to the default theme.

Set your preferences or add a feed all on this screen.

Speaking about “add a feed” function, I never get it. I have never added a feed on the go (have you?) because if I do, I must be spending way too much time on my iPhone when I’m out. But MobileRSS’s “add a feed” function is different. It allows you to search for a feed using a keyword instead. Type a keyword and boom, you’re able to add the feed in an instant via the search result. But please note that this function is only available on the Pro ($4.99) version. Read on to see the differences between different versions of the same app.

Pull Down To Refresh

NibiruTech aren’t the first to copy this useful feature.

In fact I wish that more developers would follow this, if Loren wouldn’t mind.

Swipe For More Functions

Swipe and you will be able to do more with a feed, star, share, write a note etc.

For even more functions, hit the very familiar arrow icon on the right most side of the interface.

Sharing

You can share articles on Twitter, Facebook, ReadItLater, Instapaper, Delicious and good old email.

Don’t use some of them? Turn them off from the menu in settings.

Orientation Lock

Guess what? This is actually copied from ReadItLater.

When you see this “lock” icon, you can choose to lock it so that your orientation will be locked and vice versa.

Remembers Last Position, Offline & More

MobileRSS also remembers your last screen so that when you re-launch the app, you won’t feel like you left the app. Though, I find it sometimes buggy especially when I’m on the main article reading screen.

When I re-launch the app and the feeds are refreshing themselves, the article I was reading changes to another random article. This is what I hope the developer will eventually fix.

On a train, underground, or at anywhere with no internet access? Your articles (and images too) are stored offline so you can read it when you’re not connected.

Conclusion

The only problem I have is that there isn’t much distinction between the paid and free versions, except that the free one has ads. I used the free version for quite some time without getting annoyed at the ads as they’re surprisingly unobtrusive, but decided to part with my money just to support the developer.

Most of you should have known Fluid by now. With Fluid app, you can create “Site Specific Browsers (SSB)”, basically turning any web apps into a desktop app. Essentially what Fluid does is create a browser that is dedicated to a single application. To read more about Fluid, read my previous review.

The best thing about Fluid in my opinion, is the ability to let you add another app using the Browsa plugin so that both the main web app and the “browsa plugin app” runs side by side.

This is incredibly useful when you mash-up two web apps that compliments each other – with the “browsa plugin app” being an iPhone web app.

To get what I mean, here’s a couple of examples:

Gmail + Google Calendar

I created a Gmail SSB using Fluid, thereafter adding the iPhone’s version of Google Calendar as a browsa plugin that runs on the right side of Gmail. There you have it, Gmail and Google Calendar running side by side! You can send emails and check schedules at the same time.

SUBERNOVA + Google Calendar

SUBERNOVA gives you an iCal link in which you can subscribe to your projects and milestones calendar using Google Calendar or any calendar of your choice. Here’s an SSB that runs SUBERNOVA and Google Calendar side by side.

Gmail + Remember The Milk

If you are a Gmail + RememberTheMilk user, you’ll like this.

Threadsy + Hahlo

Threadsy is my new favourite web application. I can check my MobileMe email, work email (hosted on Google Apps), Twitter and Facebook all in one interface. Sparing me from opening too many browser tabs or desktop apps. This, really simplifies my life, moreover the UI is delicious! If web apps are edible, this surely leaves a sweet after taste.

The only problem I have is that Threadsy doesn’t support Twitter Lists. Hence, running Hahlo beside Theadsy may be a good choice for stranded Twitter users like me.

Seesmic Web + Facebook

The good thing about Seesmic as a Twitter web app is that it lets you split different tweet categories into horizontal panels, eg. mentions, dms, lists etc. This makes it easy to scan through tweets. If you’re a Twitter user but don’t want to miss out on Facebook updates, pop an iPhone optimized version of Facebook to the right of Seesmic!

Google Wave + Google Buzz

Doesn’t mean some people don’t get Google Wave and talks rot about Google Buzz, it makes them any less useful. If you like both of Google’s latest innovation, this is a good match.

Ever since launching SUBERNOVA, I was dealing with Paypal almost on a daily basis. What I disliked about Paypal is that it takes some time to login, navigate between sections and view transaction history. It was difficult to filter through transaction history to view only the details you want to.

I realize I am not alone when I discovered GaragePay while googling the internet.

Developed by iwascoding, GaragePay is amongst other popular apps like GarageSale and GarageBuy the company had developed. With GaragePay, you can view, search and archive transactions without having to log into Paypal and more.

Transactions

What GaragePay does is downloading your transaction history from Paypal to let you manipulate the data locally. This tremendously speeds up reviewing your transactions and saves you from dealing with Paypal’s slowness. This saves me a great deal of time when checking balances and transaction history.

Send Money

I was able to send money easily to not one but multiple Paypal users. Sending money is fast, not saying that this is your favorite activity in Paypal, but when you do need to send money, as far as I’m concerned no one can match GaragePay’s speed and ease of use.

Smart Folders

This is the gem and my favorite part of the application.

A life saver!

If you’re familiar with iTunes’ smart playlist and Mail’s smart mailboxes, you already know how to use this.

With smart folders, you can sort your transactions by whatever you like. For me, I sort my transactions by subscribers and transactions in the last couple of days. Taking a glance through how well business is doing is now a breeze. Saves me tons of time.

Refund Money

Again, this is not a fun part of the application. But when you have to, you have to. I am glad that I do not have angry customers yet.

Refunding money is easy and quick, just click on the transaction you want to refund and hit the refund icon at the top.

Export CSV

Depending on the kind of user you are, some like to archive transactions, export to a spreadsheet for keeps. This feature is there to help. Even comes with lots of options to customize your csv export. One of the best parts is being able to manage everything locally.

Conclusion

I find that after using GaragePay to manage and view my transactions, it really saves me from wasting time logging and helps me filter my transaction history better so that it makes more sense.

If you’re selling a product or just a heavy Paypal user, GaragePay is worth checking out.
